Scholarships

LSA founded the following endowed scholarships. For more information on all SLIS scholarships, contact SLIS or visit the SLIS Scholarships and Assistantships page. To apply for any of the SLIS scholarships (including the LSA scholarships), you must complete the online application.

Barbara Parr Doughty Endowed Scholarship

The Barbara Parr Doughty Endowed Scholarship was established in 1999 from gifts donated by the Library School Association and other friends and supporters to honor Barbara Parr Doughty.

Priority consideration is given to graduate students pursuing a degree within SLIS and taking at least three hours per semester.

Cherie D. Feenker Endowed Law Librarian Scholarship

The Cherie D. Feenker Endowed Law Librarian Scholarship was established in 2001 from gifts donated by the Library School Association of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, EBSCO Industries, Inc., and other friends and supporters of the College of Communication and Information Studies.

Priority consideration is given to graduate students pursuing degrees within the School of Library and Information Studies in preparation for careers as law librarians.

Mary Lou Jones Griffin Endowed Scholarship

The Mary Lou Jones Griffin Endowed Scholarship was established in 2000 from gifts donated by the Library School Association and the School of Library and Information Studies, as well as  other friends and family to honor Mary Lou Jones Griffin.

Priority consideration is given to graduate students pursuing a degree within SLIS and taking at least three hours per semester.

Elizabeth Melton Lee Endowed Scholarship

The Elizabeth Melton Lee Endowed Scholarship was established in 2000 from gifts donated by the Library School Association, friends, and family of Elizabeth Melton Lee to honor her memory.

Priority consideration is given to graduate students pursuing a degree within SLIS and taking at least three hours per semester.

Library School Association Endowed Graduate Scholarships in SLIS

The Library School Association Endowed Graduate Scholarship in SLIS was established in 1992 from gifts donated by the Library School Association at The University of Alabama.

Scholarships from this fund are awarded to graduate students pursuing a degree in the School of Library and Information Studies.

Mary Sue McGarity Endowed Scholarship

The Mary Sue McGarity Endowed Scholarship was established in 1999 from gifts donated by the Library School Association, as well as other friends and supporters, to honor Mary Sue McGarity.

Priority consideration is given to graduate students pursuing a degree within SLIS and taking at least three hours per semester.

Kate Webb Ragsdale Scholarship Fund

The Kate Webb Ragsdale Endowed Scholarship was established in 2013 from gifts donated by the Library School Association, as well as by family, friends, and supporters who wished to honor the memory and legacy of Kate Webb Ragsdale and to promote the education of deserving graduate students in the College of Communication and Information Sciences at The University of Alabama.

Priority consideration is given to graduate students pursuing a degree within SLIS who have excellent academic credentials and who wish to pursue a career in academic libraries. The scholarship is renewable annually, provided the student is registered in SLIS and maintains a 3.8 GPA.

George R. Stewart Endowed Scholarship Fund

The George R. Stewart Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1994 from gifts donated by the Library School Association, as well as other friends and supporters who wished to honor George R. Stewart and to promote the education of deserving graduate students in the College of Communication and Information Sciences at The University of Alabama.

Priority consideration is given to graduate students pursuing a degree within SLIS and taking at least three hours per semester.

Ruth Waldrop Part-time Student Endowed Scholarship in the School of Library and Information Studies

The Ruth Waldrop Part-Time Student Endowed Scholarship in the School of Library and Information Studies was established in 1996 from gifts donated by the Library School Association, as well as other friends and supporters, with a matching gift by EBSCO Industries, Inc., to honor Ruth Waldrop.

Priority for the award is given to part-time graduate students pursuing a degree within the School of Library and Information Studies and taking at least three hours per semester.

Annie Ford Wheeler Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Annie Ford Wheeler Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1999 from gifts donated by the Library School, other friends, and supporters to honor Annie Ford Wheeler and to promote the education of deserving graduate students in the College of Communication and Information Sciences.

Priority consideration is given to graduate students pursuing a degree within SLIS and taking at least three hours per semester./blockquote>
